Disney’s Animal Kingdom Itinerary 2024

The Animal Kingdom is one of the most popular theme parks at Disney World. If you’re planning a trip to Disney and want to visit the Animal Kingdom, here’s an itinerary that will help you make the most of your time there. It includes our top tips for making the most of your visit, as well as some recommended attractions and dining experiences. Enjoy!

Animal Kingdom Itinerary 2024 Overview

The Animal Kingdom is a large park, and there is a lot to see and do. To help you make the most of your time, we’ve created an itinerary that includes our top tips for enjoying the park. We’ve also included recommended attractions and dining experiences.

Start your day at the Animal Kingdom by getting there early. The park opens at 9:00 am, but we recommend getting there at least 30 minutes early. This will allow you to explore the park and decide what you want to do first.

As you enter the park, make sure to pick up a map. This will help you navigate the park and find your way around.

First Ride at Kilimanjaro Safari

Head to the Kilimanjaro Safaris first. This is one of the most popular attractions at the Animal Kingdom, and it can get crowded later in the day. This suggestion will change based on whether you have Genie + or not. More on this later.

If you have time, we also recommend checking out the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, a self-guided tour that takes you through an African forest where you can see gorillas, birds, and other animals.

Make sure to take a break in the afternoon to rest and recharge. You can explore some of the shops or grab a bite to eat at one of the restaurants.

Later in the day, we recommend seeing the Festival of the Lion King show. This is a live Broadway-style show with singing, dancing, and acrobatics. It’s one of the most popular shows at Disney World, so make sure to get there early to get a good seat.

The Animal Kingdom closes at 9:00 pm, but there are usually still plenty of things to do. We recommend checking out one of the nighttime shows, such as the Rivers of Light show. This is a beautiful light and water show that takes place on the lake in front of the park.

But let’s get deeper into our Animal Kingdom itinerary! We hope you have a magical day at the park.

Animal Kingdom Hours

Animal Kingdom is open 365 days a year, but operating hours can vary depending on the time of year. During the busy summer season, the park typically opens at 9:00 am and closes at 9:00 pm. However, during the fall and winter months, operating hours are usually shorter, with the park closing at 6:00 pm or 7:00 pm. Guests should consult the Walt Disney World website for specific operating hours before planning their visit.

Closed Animal Kingdom Rides 2024

  • Flights of Wonder: Closed permanently on December 31, 2017
  • Primeval Whirl: Closed permanently on March 16, 2020
  • Rivers of Light – We Are One: Closed permanently on March 16, 2020

Disney Genie+ and Lightning Lanes at Animal Kingdom

Genie is a new system that Disney created after shutting down the FastPass system in March 2020 due to COVID.

To use Genie, use the My Disney Experience app, and it is free for anyone.

Genie +, however, is the paid option of Genie that allows you to reserve ride times similar to what FastPass used to do.

You can add Genie+ if you have a Disney World resort package with tickets and want to buy the service every day.

If you only want to use the service for certain days of your trip, you’ll want to buy Genie before 7 am on the day you wish to use it.

These attractions will be available for the necessary purchase of $15+ tax per person per day at Animal Kingdom.

  • Dinosaur
  • A Celebration of the Festival of the Lion King
  • It’s Tough to Be a Bug
  • The Animation Experience at Conservation Station
  • Kali River Rapids
  • Na’vi River Journey
  • Feathered Friends in Flight
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris

We do not suggest using Genie+ for your Animal Kingdom day as it doesn’t seem to offer as much value as some of the other parks.

Individual Lightning Lane Options In Animal Kingdom

Two rides at every park cost an additional amount if you’d like to “skip the line” at Disney World.

This is separate from Genie +, where you are paying per day, per ticket. You do not need to pay for Genie + to use individual lightning lanes.

For Animal Kingdom, we suggest not doing the Genie + and getting the individual lightning lane option for Flight of Passage.

Prices start at $9 per person.

Park Hopping and Your Animal Kingdom Itinerary

If you want to make the most of your trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, you’ll want to consider “park hopping.” This means visiting more than one park during your stay. Animal Kingdom is one of four parks at Walt Disney World, and it is full of things to see and do. Park hopping can help you make the most of your time and see everything that interests you.

When you park hop, you’ll need to purchase a ticket that entitles you to visit more than one park. You can then use this ticket to enter any of the four parks at Walt Disney World. Once you’re inside a park, you can hop between them as much as you like. This can be a great way to see everything that interests you without feeling rushed.

If you’re planning on park hopping, it’s a good idea to have an itinerary in mind. That way, you can make sure you hit all the highlights of each park. For example, if you’re interested in seeing the animals at Animal Kingdom, you might want to start your day there and then hop over to Epcot or Hollywood Studios later on. If you’re planning on park hopping, make sure to check the operating hours for each park so you can plan your day accordingly.

Many people consider Animal Kingdom a half-day park, which I can totally get on board with if you go to Disney World often. In that case, the park hopper does make sense.

However, if you are planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip, I would dedicate one full day to Animal Kingdom. Experiencing Animal Kingdom at night is a must.

Animal Kingdom Touring Plan Basics

Touring the Animal Kingdom is a fun and educational experience for the whole family. Here are some basics to help you make the most of your visit.

The Animal Kingdom is divided into seven sections: Africa, Asia, Discovery Island, Dinoland U.S.A., The Oasis, Rafiki’s Planet Watch, and Walt Disney World Railroad. Each section has its own attractions, shows, and dining options.

Start your day at Animal Kingdom bright and early; you should do the Animal Kingdom rope drop. We will discuss more on that later.

This Animal Kingdom itinerary aims to get as much, if not everything, done. Also, maybe not spending all day in lines.

Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s flexibility in the overall AK itinerary, but the overall theme will be the same.

Animal Kingdom Rope Drop

For those who don’t know, “rope drop” is the moment when the gates open and guests are allowed into the parks. Rope drop usually happens early in the morning, and it’s often the best time to get on popular rides with minimal wait times.

Of course, rope drop can be a bit of a madhouse—but it’s also a lot of fun. There’s something magical about being one of the first people to enter the parks for the day, and it’s a great way to start your vacation on a high note.

Plus, you’ll have plenty of time to explore all that the parks offer before the crowds start to arrive. So with almost all of my itineraries, I always suggest rope drop.

Start your park day by leaving the Tree of Life and heading towards Pandora, the World of Avatar. The first thing we are going to do is ride the Na’Vi River Journey.

animal kingdom itinerary

Next, Flight of Passage.

Avatar Flight of Passage is one of the most popular rides at Animal Kingdom and for good reason, it’s an incredible ride. You might have to wait a bit for this ride unless you use lightning lanes. Make sure to confirm the height requirements, too.

TriceraTop Spin is next, so head over to DinoLand USA.

DinoLand is also where you’ll find the Dinosaur ride as well.

Speak of, Dinosaur is next. Make sure to check height requirements here as well. For little ones, a visit to The Boneyard might be in order.

The Boneyard is a great place to explore and play for kids

Now, let’s head to Adventure Post to meet your favorite Disney characters (see the section above for the characters).

If you’re hot and ok getting wet it’s time to ride the famous Kali River Rapids.

You’ll get soaked on this one so make sure to bring a change of clothes or poncho.

Once you’re done getting wet, it’s time to explore the Maharajah Jungle Trek, where you can see tigers and other animals.

It’s now time for lunch, and there are plenty of options, including quick service, yet delicious locations.

Lunch is going to be at Satu’li Canteen in Pandora. After lunch, we are going to let our food settle and watch the Celebration of the Festival of the Lion King!

When the show is over, we are going to go on Kilimanjaro Safari where we can see real animals in their natural habitat!

After the safari, we will go on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, where we can see more animals and learn about their conservation.

Then, we are going to go on Discovery Island Trails where we can explore more of the island and see even more animals.

After that, it’s time for more Disney Character time! We are going to meet some of our favorite characters and get their autographs.

After dinner, we are going to explore the Oasis Exhibits, where we can see more animals.

Last but not least, we are going to go on Expedition Everest, where we can experience what it’s like to climb Mount Everest.

DINOSAUR is next. This is another intense ride but doesn’t have a height requirement.

After that, I would hit up Na’vi River Journey and then work my way down the list of rides, finishing with Maharajah Jungle Trek.

If you have time, I would also recommend seeing the Festival of the Lion King show and perhaps going on Kali River Rapids. These are both great experiences but can be skipped if you’re short on time.

Animal Kingdom is a truly unique and amazing place. There’s something for everyone to enjoy, and you’re sure to have a great time. Whether you’re visiting with kids or without, be sure to follow these tips to make the most of your visit.

How Many Days Do You Need At Animal Kingdom?

Animal Kingdom is a must-see for any animal lover, and with so much to see and do, you’ll need at least one full day to experience it all.

Start your visit by heading to Pandora for Flight of Passage. Then, make sure to explore the park’s many trails, where you’ll get up close to some of the world’s most fascinating creatures.

Head to the base of Mount Everest for a thrilling roller coaster ride. Don’t forget to catch a show at one of the park’s theaters, and be sure to stay for the nighttime Spectacular of Lights parade.

How many hours do you need in Animal Kingdom?

To experience everything that Animal Kingdom has to offer, you’ll need at least 7 hours.

If you want to make the most of your time, consider getting lightning lane passes or even Genie + for some of the park’s most popular attractions.

Is Animal Kingdom A 1 Or 2-Day Park?

Animal Kingdom is a 1-day park though after many visits I can test that two is ok too. The main reason for this is that the park does start to close down earlier than the other parks.

This is due to the animals that are in the park and how they need their rest. So if you want to experience everything that Animal Kingdom has to offer, you’ll need to visit for at least one full day.

Is Animal Kingdom Worth A Full Day?

Definitely. Animal Kingdom is one of the most unique and interesting parks at Walt Disney World. There’s so much to see and do, you’ll need at least one full day to experience it all.

From the thrilling rides to the exotic animals, Animal Kingdom is a must-see for anyone.

The Animal Kingdom is one of Disney’s four theme parks and it is based on the natural world. The park is made up of seven different lands, each with its own unique attractions and experiences.

Guests can explore Africa, Asia, DinoLand U.S.A., Discovery Island, Pandora-The World of Avatar, Rafiki’s Planet Watch, and Camp Minnie-Mickey. Each land offers something different for guests to enjoy.

One of the most popular areas in the Animal Kingdom is Pandora-The World of Avatar which opened in 2017. This area features two new rides as well as a number of shops and restaurants. The Na’vi River Journey is a slow boat ride that takes guests through the bioluminescent rainforest of Pandora. The other ride, Avatar Flight of Passage, is a 3D simulated flying experience that allows guests to feel like they are riding on the back of a banshee.

The Animal Kingdom is also home to the popular Kilimanjaro Safaris ride which takes guests on an open-air jeep tour through the African savanna. On this tour, guests may see some of the park’s live animals up close including lions, elephants, and giraffes.
